Seventy hand-coloured shell plates from Spécies général et iconographie des coquilles vivantes by L.-C. Kiener, continued by Dr P. Fischer, published in Paris. Restored, typeset, and prepared for printing at home.

Two hundred and fifty-two figures across seventy plates — cowries, egg cowries, ancillas and the auger shell — each named in Latin and in French exactly as the plate sets it.

What you receive

  • 70 shell plates — US Letter at a true 300 DPI
  • Provenance document (PDF) — all 252 figures identified
  • Printing guide (PDF, 1 p)

Read from the plates, not from a catalogue

Every name in the provenance document was read off the plate itself. Names, accents and authorities are reproduced as the printer set them, including the figure numbers that run through the volume.

Printing

  • US Letter, 8.5 × 11 in, 300 DPI
  • Quarter-inch trim margin on all four sides
  • Print at 100% — never “fit to page”
  • High-quality JPEG, sRGB. Any home printer.

A note on the names

Shell nomenclature has changed considerably since this atlas was published. Of the fifty-six species that lead its plates, two are still named as Kiener printed them. The accepted name of each is given beside the printed one, queried from the World Register of Marine Species.
